VAT Return Filing in the UAE
Accurate, on-time VAT returns filed with the FTA — input and output VAT reconciled, the right treatment applied, and penalties avoided.
01The challenge
Once you are registered, every VAT period brings a filing deadline. Reconciling input against output VAT, handling zero-rated, exempt and reverse-charge supplies correctly, and filing on time is exactly where many businesses slip — and the FTA penalises late or incorrect returns.
02What UAE law requires
The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) sets the filing rules:
- A VAT return must be filed for each tax period — usually quarterly, though the FTA assigns some businesses monthly periods.
- The return and any payment are due within 28 days of the end of each tax period.
- Returns are filed through EmaraTax, and records must be kept for at least 5 years.
- Late or incorrect filing results in administrative penalties.
